Lyrical Thursdays: Elenore

This summer I am working in Grand Rapids a bit (more on all of that another day), and while I'm doing my very interesting and exciting educational research and organization, I find myself listening to my stations on Pandora a lot.  I have slightly eclectic (unusual?) tastes in music.  My favorite stations are based around Jamie Cullum (jazz), Peter, Paul, & Mary, and Tony Orlando & Dawn.  Am I a 60 year-old woman?  I also have stations based on Jack Johnson, Kings of Leon, Coeur de Pirate (a French-Canadian singer - she's awesome), Josh Turner, and Bon Jovi.  I guess when the mood hits, I want to have the right station ready.

One of the things I like so much about the "Oldies" stations are the goofy lyrics of some of the songs.  I mean, I know some of these people were high, but some of them weren't.  Some of these lyrics just came out of their fully functional brains.

My favorites are the more ridiculous "sentimental" songs - they're hilarious and usually stick in my head the most.  I heard this one recently and always have to laugh whenever I do.  Lines like, "Your looks intoxicate me/Even though your folks hate me," "gee I think you're swell...you're my pride and joy, et cetera," and "I really think you're groovy/Let's go out to a movie," really just get to me.

So, for your listening pleasure, here is The Turtles' Elenore:

Elenore

You got a thing about you
I just can't live without you
I really want you, Elenore, near me
Your looks intoxicate me
Even though your folks hate me
There's no one like you, Elenore, really

[Chorus:]
Elenore, gee I think you're swell
And you really do me well
You're my pride and joy, et cetera
Elenore, can I take the time
To ask you to speak your mind
Tell me that you love me better

I really think you're groovy
Let's go out to a movie
What do you say, now, Elenore, can we?
They'll turn the lights way down low
Maybe we won't watch the show
I think I love you, Elenore, love me

[Chorus:]
Elenore, gee I think you're swell
And you really do me well
You're my pride and joy, et cetera
Elenore, can I take the time
To ask you to speak your mind
Tell me that you love me better

Elenore, gee I think you're swell ah-hah
Elenore, gee I think you're swell ah-hah
Hah

Man, I don't know about this - I feel like I need some kind of PhD to understand this song!
